  1.                     Guide for Assist_2: Balncing Equations

  4. Introduction
  5. ------------
  6. This application will enable you to produce a variety of printed worksheets
  7. based around the chemistry topic balancing equations. It was designed for
  8. school use to fulfil three roles:
  9.  
  10. a) Source of material for homework
  11. b) Revision aid
  12. c) Generate material quickly for a 'fill in lesson' 
  13.  
  14. You can produce four types of printed worksheet - in each case a chemical
  15. reaction is shown (eg MgO + CuO --> MgO + Cu) with something missing:
  16. a) A number needs to be inserted in order to balance the equation
  17. b) One of the products of a chemical reaction is missing
  18. c) Students must state if an equation is balanced properly or not
  19. d) One of the reactants of a chemical reaction is missing
  20.  
  21. Questions are selected from a bank of questions, and different atoms
  22. within an equation are selected each time. This means that each time you
  23. print a particular worksheet it will be different.

  26. Using Assist_2: Equations
  27. -------------------------
  28. The Trinity.Medium font will need to been have 'seen' by the system.
  29.  
  30. Load by double clicking, then click on the icon bar to open the Assist_2
  31. window. The program works as a series of stages, you move between each
  32. stage by selecting the options you want for that stage (either radio or
  33. option icons) and then clicking on the NEXT button to move on.
  34.  
  35. The stages break down as follows:
  36. 1. Select the type of worksheet you want from the four available (see above)
  37. 2. Choose a layout for your worksheet - the options refer to what will
  38.    appear on the header and footer of the page (I recommend printing one of
  39.    each at some stage for reference).
  40. 3. Decide how many questions you require (1-25).
  41. 4. Place a reference on a worksheet (optional).
  42. 5. Print.
  43. 6. Backtrack through the stages (BACK button) until you reach the start or 
  44.    something you want to alter.

  47. Registration
  48. ------------
  49. This software is shareware - you try it before you buy it. You may use it
  50. for up to 30 days to evaluate its potential. If you continue to use it
  51. after then you must register it by sending a cheque for 7.99 to the address
  52. below. Print your name and address clearly, state who/what organisation
  53. you want the application registerd to & the name of the application (ie
  54. Assist_2: Balancing Equations).
  55.  
  56. By registering you will receive a new copy of the application, with the
  57. unregistered windows that pop up removed. You can also be kept up to date
  58. with new applications as they become available. There is nothing to force
  59. you to register - but if you continue to use it beyond 30 days you are
  60. being dishonest and jepardise future releases.

  90. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  91. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  92. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. I have not tried them on a
  93. RISC PC, but they ought to be ok!
  94.  
  95. Geography:
  96. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  97.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  98.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  99.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  100.   & Africa.
  101. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  102.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  103.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  104. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  105.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  106. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  107.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  108. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  109.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  110.  
  111. Science:
  112. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  113.   against the clock.
  114. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  115.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  116.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  117.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  118. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  119.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  120.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  121.   different each time they are printed.
  122. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  123.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  124.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  125.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  126.   also be produced.
  127. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  128. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  129.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  130. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  131.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  132. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  133.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  135. Word Puzzles:
  136. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  137.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  138. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  139.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  140.   on screen
  141. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  142.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  143. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  144.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  145. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  146.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  147. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  148. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  149. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  150.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  151.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  152.   printed.

  154. Picture Puzzles:
  155. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  156.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  157.   range of abilities.
  158. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  159.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  160.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  161.   levels.
  162. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  163.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  164. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  165.   or columns into their correct positions.
  166.  
  167. Miscellaneous:
  168. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  169.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  170. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  171.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  172.   your own tests.
  173. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  174.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  175. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  176.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  177. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  178.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  179. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  180.   export as a sprite file.
  181. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  182.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  183.   variables as well as sprites and sounds. Other features include variable
  184.   line thickness, auto symmetry and backdrops.
  185. * Birthday & Today. Produce an A4 sized poster on events taking place in
  186.   history either on your Birthday or any particular day. Information
  187.   displayed includes Famous Birthdays on the same day, events, films, songs
  188.   and sporting events. Variety of borders/watermarks provided.
  189. * School CV & CV+. School leavers (CV) or sixth form students (CV+) can
  190.   quickly create a CV by entering data. Layouts can be chosen from a
  191.   predefined set, and fonts changed. DTP style output without having to use
  192.   a DTP application.
